The term stock car came to describe an automobile car racing.

This is used to differentiate car from a racing car with a custom car design for racing purposes. Stock car racing was first regulated by Bill France, Sr.

Automobile racing like stock car racing series are commonly found in the United States, Canada, Brazil, and New Zealand. De facto series of stock racing car series is the world’s largest series of stock car racing. NASCAR is the largest stock car racing series in the United States. NASCAR also operates a junior league stock car nationwide.  The most famous stock racing car series is Daytona 500 mile race at Florida Daytona Beach. Brickyard 400 mile race is the second best stock car racing series.

Usually, stock racing car series run in oval tracks with approximately 0.25 miles to 2.66 miles in length. Top series of stock car racing is measuring 200 to 600 miles in length. Typical average speed of series in stock car racing is 70% to 80%. Some series in stock car racing may reach speed of 200 mph, such as Charlotte motor speedway and Indianapolis motor speedway.

Stock car racer usually starts in karting, some start racing on dirt surfaces before completely racing on asphalt. Stock car racing have different classes, such as:

  • Street stock. This consists of street vehicles which bought to the public; sometimes it is called street stock, showroom stock, and pure stock racing. Other showroom stock allows safety modifications prepared in showroom stock.
  • Super stock. This is quite similar with street stock. However, super stock allows more modifications to the engine.

Late model. This is the highest class of stock car racing which have subcategories, such as limited late models and super late models. Late model can be a custom built machine or heavy modified street car.
